Creative Delights: Spend a Relaxing Weekend Exploring CNY At Your Own Pace

Art is presented in different forms; from the brushstroke paintings we see in museums, to the delicate art of cooking and food presentation, to the natural masterpieces seen in the environment around us. And in our fast-paced world, it can be easy to overlook the beauty that surrounds us in our everyday lives.

Let’s slow down and explore the creativity found throughout Central New York. This three-day, two-night itinerary will take you through three CNY cities for an eye-opening adventure you can take at a leisurely pace.

Be sure to check out cnyarts.org/events for events happening during the weekend of your visit!

Friday: Syracuse and Skaneateles

Start your day with a visit to the Landmark Theatre—its history and stunning interior alone are worth a visit! Be sure to see what performances or events are scheduled, so you may plan your weekend (or future visit) accordingly.

After your promenade, swing by Noble Cellar, an award-winning fine dining restaurant tucked inside the compelling atmosphere of a renovated 1800s church. Get your first taste of how art can come in the form of carefully crafted cuisine at this historical hidden gem. Once you’ve had your fill of yummy bites, hop in the car and take the short drive to the cozy town of Skaneateles.

Upon your arrival, check into your accommodation for the night – Mirbeau Inn & Spa. You are sure to feel like royalty in this 34 guestroom spa retreat which combines the best of both worlds: a world-class spa and an intimate French manor house.

Stop into the Skaneateles Historical Society and discover more about the city’s past and present. View exhibitions, learn the area’s history from staff, take a walking tour to see historic buildings, and more!

Dinner tonight is at Bluewater Grill. Savor your meal while overlooking the scenic Skaneateles Lake, a glorious picture painted by nature for us to enjoy!

Saturday: Oswego

Good morning! Start your day with breakfast at The Bistro & Wine Bar, located at Mirbeau Inn & Spa. The next leg of your journey will take you to Oswego.

Once you arrive, pay a visit to the Fort Ontario State Historic Site. History is abundant in this area – like the ruins of fortifications that were the site of French and Indian War and War of 1812 battles. Fort Ontario also served as the only refugee camp in the United States for Jewish victims of the Holocaust. You will be amazed at the stories of human triumph which await around every corner here.

For lunch, head over to Red Sun Fire Roasting Co., where you’ll be treated to wood-fired pizza and delicious American fare.

Your journey into CNY’s art and culture continues at the next stop: the Art Association of Oswego. This association was founded more than 30 years ago with the purpose of “furthering art appreciation, art education and cultural enrichment for the surrounding area.” Take your time to walk around and enjoy the current exhibition that’s showcasing works by local artists.

Tonight, you’ll be staying at the Clarion Hotel & Suites Riverfront, which is perched along the shores of the Oswego River. Check into your room before heading out for dinner at Canale’s Restaurant, an Oswego favorite for more than 70 years. Dine on time-honored, authentic Italian cuisine as the sun sets over your second day.

Saturday: Syracuse

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before hopping in the car to venture back to Syracuse. And no trip to Syracuse would be complete without a stop at the Everson Museum of Art!

This museum hosts more than 10,000 pieces of art and prides itself on being the first museum dedicated to the collection of American art. If you’re a fan of ceramics, you’re in luck – the Everson is home to one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation.

When you’re done roaming the museum, make your way to the Downtown Farmers Market, where you can find a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables and stands from local businesses. While you’re here, take in the sights and sounds of Clinton Square, and pay close attention to its enchanting 19th century architecture.

Clinton Square is a charming spot where you’ll find trendy shops, restaurants, pubs, a variety of local businesses, and a fountain park through which the Erie Canal once flowed!

Finally, finish off with a delicious lunch at the original Dinosaur Bar-B-Que location, an Upstate New York staple. Slow-cooked meats, notes of Southern barbecue and savory side dishes? It doesn’t get any better than this!
